Genetics Lingo

Genetics is the branch of biology that deals with heredity and the laws governing it.  Genetics experts have their own unique vocabulary, just as horsemen do.

Say you said the following to a person with absolutely no horse experience:  "My tobiano gelding has high withers and a collected canter."  It would probably sound like Greek (or some other foreign language) to them!  When you think about it, most of the words "tobiano", "gelding", "withers", "collected" and "canter" are most likely terms that they have never even heard of.  Experienced horsemen, however, would understand the sentence completely.

Once the vocabulary that pertains to a specific profession is learned, it is no longer confusing and becomes second nature.  Just as it is important for the horseman to learn to talk like a horseman, it is important for you to understand the basic terminology of genetics if you are planning to breed horses.

A good place to start would be this website.  Check out the PintabianBiz Field Glossary and look up the definitions of the words you find confusing.  Don't let genetics be bewildering...the "lingo" may just be the hardest part!

December 31, 2012 Deadline

The PHRI received notice from Ford Program Headquarters that, thanks to IRS Section 179 of the IRS tax code, many businesses that invest in new equipment will be able to write off up to 100% of these purchases on their 2012 IRS tax returns. Normally businesses spread these deductions over several years. But now, the tax benefits provided under IRS Section 179 allow many businesses to write off qualifying new equipment in the first year it is placed in service. Many thanks to Ford for this timely reminder of the deadline.  Note that this information was provided as a public service and should not be construed as tax advice by either Ford or the PHRI. For more information, consult with your tax professional and contact your local Ford dealer.

Our Most Valuable Asset

The PHRI would like to thank "techies" Matt and Trav for their hard work in getting the new computer system up and running.  All data has now been transferred and backed up.  Getting back on schedule is now our number one priority.  We apologize for any inconvenience our members may have experienced.  We consider our membership to be our most valuable asset and thank you for your patience!

Arson Suspected in Fires

Fire investigators have determined that the cause of the County 27 fire near Karlstad, Minnesota was most likely arson and that other area fires may also be connected.  A reward has been established and currently stands at $8,500.00 as of October 10, 2012.  The fire burned approximately 4,400 acres in Marshall and Kittson counties and destroyed houses, mobile homes and outbuildings in the city of Karlstad and the surrounding area.  Fortunately, no lives were lost.

Evacuation Went Smoothly

The staff of the PHRI would like to sincerely thank all fire departments, agencies and individuals that put out the Karlstad area fires on September 30, 2012 and October 2, 2012.  The evacuation of the PHRI went smoothly and no records were damaged or lost in the blaze.  The power outage that followed was inconvenient but power is now restored and the resulting computer issues are expected to be resolved soon.

Hardship Coming to an End

All legitimate breed registries eventually end the admission of hardshipped horses and the PHRI is no different.  Effective December 31, 2017, the PHRI will no longer be registering or recording tobiano horses unless both sire and dam are registered or recorded.  Individuals interested in introducing any new tobiano lines before the books are closed are asked to contact the PHRI office as soon as possible.  Please note that this does not affect Arabian Outcross horses.
